The electronic publishing means that all the capabilities of computers (hardware, software and accessories) are used to convert the content which is published in traditional me thods into an electronic format. The output is either on CD (CDROM-DVD-VCD) or on the internet.

The traditional publishing means:
  1. Publishing of paper books, magazines, … etc
  2. Publishing of sound content on audio cassettes (lectures, speeches, songs)
  3. 3- Publishing of video using a VCR on Video cassettes. (e.g. Lectures, Films, TV programs). Therefore, The output of the process of e-publishing can be divided into one of the following forms:
First: The Conversion of Paper Book Into an Electronic Form
Several technologies and tools are used in the electronic conversion of books. The electronic form that comes out of this process depends on the following:
  1. The type of media that carries the final product. It could be a CD, the internet or a standalone device called the eBook device or I-Pad. Such device does not need the computer to perform its functions. Recently, the third generation of mobiles is using similar functions in displaying eContents.
  2. The Level of programming, the use of multimedia and interactivity that are used to display contents in electronic format.
In the following the different types of these programs are described:
  A.The Basic eBook:
This Program contains a set of basic specifications which can be summarized as follows:
  1. The possibility of browsing the book electronically through a browser or by using the main and sub-main index.
  2. The possibility of search for a word or sentence in the contents of the book.
  3. The graphics and illustrations are merged with the text.
  4. The possibility of hyperlinks between key words in the text of the original book. This includes the link to the sited references at the end of the book and foot notes.
  5. Possibility of printing any part of the text.
  6. The use of clip board to capture any part of the text.
  7. The design of the eBook program should have:
    1. Introductory screen with animation or flash.
    2. The Quranic verses should be pronounced by a professional recite.
  8. The program should work on the most recent versions of windows.
  B. The Advanced eBook:
This type is an interactive program on CD or the internet to display text with picture, graphics, tables to be used for reading, studying, and preparation of reports, research, lectures, … etc.
The main features of this program are as follows:
  1. It should work in all recent versions of windows.
  2. It should have a high quality Graphic User Interface (GUI), which has advanced design, proper selection of colors and ease of use.
  3. The program should have browsing capacities of contents which are:
    1. Tree structure Menu system.
    2. Hyperlinks.
    3. Intelligent search system: this includes search by word, sentence, group of letters and subjects. The program stores all previous search results to reuse it by the user.
    4. Book Marks system which allows user to electronically mark positions in the text to be used later by just clicking on its link stored by the program as a book mart. Multiple and unlimited book marks can be stored.
  4. Contents Acquiring System There are a group of tools, one of them developed by KCG
      1. The Clipboard:

this is the normal window clip board to acquire text from the book by the action "cut" and past it in other application such as "word".
      1. Information Basket

It is similar, in functionality, to supermarket basket. The user can add to it any text while he is browsing the eBook without having to leave the program. He can edit the contents in the basket, then he can print it or store it in a file or transfer it to another program such as "Word"
  5. Referring
  6. In case of preparing the subject in a suitable form, part of the subjects can be referred to in the original text for more information or it can be referred to a page on another website or program. References of a research paper can be referred to from within the text – by hyperlinks.

  C- Multimedia e-Book
This type of eBook has all the features of the advanced eBook. In additions the following features are added:
  1. Enrichment locations are added to a limited number in the text such as:
    • Pictures, illustrations, photo and maps
    • Animation and flash
    • Digital video clips
    • Digital simulation such as lab experiments, physical and mathematical phenomena
  2. Sound:Sound can be added to all or part of the text. Either automatic or manual display of sound can be used. It is also possible to add real or animated characters in a part of the screen to simulate a real teacher or trainer.

The cost of multimedia books depends on the amount of multimedia and interactivity. The benefit from such type of books is much greater than the traditional paper book
  D. A Complete Multimedia Interactive Software
In the previous type of eBook, the general shape of the original book is still there. This type is no more related in shape to the original book. Only the original contents of the paper book are used as the content for fully interactive multimedia software. Usually each type has his unique design as a custom made application. KCG has a large library of programming tools and digital multimedia libraries and learning Objects to produce best quality software for such applications.
Second: The Conversion of Audio Content to an Interactive Multimedia Software
Such program is done in several steps. The first step is to convert the sound content into text. Based on audio and text contents the interactive multimedia software is built with all features of browsing, search and contents acquiring.
This type of application can be either prepared as a web application or produced on CD with two systems at the same time (hybrid system). These two systems are:
  1. A complete multimedia interactive software
  2. Compressed sound (MP3) that works with MP3 players. In such mode, the user can listen to the sound contents only. But, if the CD is plugged into a PC it will run in the second mode as software.
Third: The conversion of Video Content into an Interactive Multimedia Software
All types of video contents can be treated in similar techniques like audio contents. The audio contents converted to text. Both text and video contents are used within a multimedia interactive software application. The digital video appears at part of the screen and is fully synchronized with the displayed text. This technology is used in searching in the video contents using the corresponding text. The program can be web enabled on a CD or DVD. In this later case it could:
  1. Run as VCD or DVD on a VCD or DVD player. In this case video contents are only displayed
  2. Run as a computer software when CD or DVD is plugged into the computer.

KCG has many experience and projects for all these types of ePublishing work. The products and projects are available in the market. They were used and tested for many years. Many of KCG products were adopted by MOE in several Arab countries. Several projects were done for international organizations such as the world Health Organization (WHO) and were award winner such as the unified Medical Dictionary (UMD).
